Better Together
The YMCA of Riverside City & County was incorporated in 1884 and currently serves Western Riverside County with program thrusts for geographic areas: Riverside, Moreno Valley/Perris, Jurupa and Temecula/Murrieta.
Currently we are operating on an $8,000,000 yearly operation budget serving 20,000 members and program participants, 75% which are children or families. Sources of income include program and membership fees, government grants, United Way endowment earnings, community business and individual contributions, and special events. Sixty percent of participants receive financial assistance to participate in programs.
Child care is our largest program providing licensed care to over 600 participants in programs at fifteen different locations we also serve over 15,000 in our after school program at 53 locations throughout the county. Our other large youth programs are youth sports with 3,500 participants and 3,100 in aquatics.
A large percentage of our adult programs are for special populations, Arthritis Foundation classes, other aquatic programs, and for those with disabilities.
Volunteers who serve as board members, committee members, program volunteers, and fundraisers provide much of the life blood of your YMCA.
The History of the YMCA of Riverside City & County
The Riverside Young Men’s Christian Association was founded on November 24th, 1884. The formative meeting was held in the original First Baptist Church at Eighth (University Avenue and Lemon Streets. The “Y” rented two rooms on the second floor of the Central block on the west side of Main Street, midway between Eighth and Ninth. Membership grew rapidly and larger quarters were found in a store building at the Northwest corner of Eighth and Orange Streets.
